Meanwhile in Space

NASA recently discovered a new interstellar object, a comet passing through our solar system—just the third time such an event has been recorded. NASA also recently released the closest images of the Sun, which were taken by the Parker Solar Probe. Also this week, scientists have observed the collision and merger of two massive black holes beyond the Milky Way, the largest such merger observed. And yesterday was the 60th anniversary of the first close-up pictures of Mars, taken by the Mariner 4 space probe.
The Closest Images Ever Taken of the Sun's Atmosphere. On its record-breaking pass by the Sun in December 2024, NASA's Parker Solar Probe captured stunning new images from within the Sun's atmosphere. These newly released images - taken closer to the Sun than we've ever been before - are helping scientists better understand the Sun's influence across the solar system, including events that can affect Earth. NASA Animation Sizes Up the Biggest Black Holes. The animation shows 10 supersized black holes that occupy center stage in their host galaxies, including the Milky Way and M87, scaled by the sizes of their shadows. Starting near the Sun, the camera steadily pulls back to compare ever-larger black holes to different structures in our solar system. [MUSIC ONLY. NO NARRATION]

Dig It

A couple of noteworthy discoveries, one involving an ancient city and the other a prehistoric animal, were recently announced.

Ancient Maya tomb

The tomb of Maya king Te K’ab Chaak has been unearthed in Caracol, an ancient city and archaeological site (pictured below) in modern-day Belize. The find was uncovered by a team of researchers from the University of Houston, headed by husband-and-wife team Arlen and Diane Chase, who have been active in Caracol since 1985. The tomb of Te K’ab Chaak—the first ruler of the city, who established a royal dynasty—was rich with elaborate artifacts made of jade and ceramics and is being described as a major breakthrough in Maya archaeology. Caracol flourished during the 6th century CE, replacing Tikal as the major regional power about 562 CE.

Ruins at Caracol, west-central Belize. The new fossil on display

What are the odds? The Denver Museum of Nature and Science discovered a dinosaur fossil resting deep beneath its parking lot last week quite by chance. The museum, known for its dinosaur-themed displays, was studying the feasibility of installing a geothermal heating system when it happened upon the fossil, which is believed to be a vertebra from a small plant-eating dinosaur dating to the Late Cretaceous Period.
