Dawn of the Atomic Age

Eighty years ago today a new era began as the first atomic bomb was tested near Alamogordo, New Mexico, a culmination of the Manhattan Project. The test, code-named Trinity, resulted in an explosive power equivalent to roughly 20,000 tons of TNT. The following month the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, hastening the end of World War II and marking both the first and last time such bombs were used.
